Progress Software partners talk about the SaaS and SOA trend - invitation

  25.05.07

Central London location
11.30am  start –presentations/ open discussion followed by lunch and one-to-one interviews

SaaSOA
The combination of SaaS (Software as a Service) and SOA (service oriented architecture) is starting to gain market traction as a way of providing SaaS  that is more easy and readily adaptable to meet changing market and customer  needs. With 160 partners delivering SOA-based SaaS applications, Progress  Software and its partners are at the forefront of the trend.

Progress Software would like to invite you to meet some of their partners who have developed growing revenue streams from SaaS and are able to discuss the benefits that combining SaaS and SOA adds to their business.

The three application partners are LexisNexis Visualfiles ( www.visualfiles.com ) who provides case management and e-conveyancing as a service; KCS ( www.kcsplc.co.uk ) with payroll and personnel management services and Solicitors Own Software (www. soslegal.co.uk) with Virtual Practices ( www.virtualpractices.co.uk ) which takes SaaS a step further to include business process outsourcing.

They have a wealth of experience stemming from the emergence of the application service provider (ASP) in 2000 and will be able to:
 - describe their SaaS and the significance of SaaS delivery to revenues and future growth
 - offer tips for success/ and pitfalls to avoid
 - comment on this trend to SOA-based SaaS applications.

Progress Software will also talk about its unique role. Unlike vendors such  as Oracle and Microsoft who compete for SaaS business with their ISVs, Progress  does not provide any applications, and doesn’t manage or host applications. Instead it helps its Application Partners  to develop SaaS-based applications and through its various partner empowerment programmes (technical, business and operational) and bring those applications to market quickly.

In fact Progress was the first software vendor back in 1999 to understand the ASP (application service provider)  model – the forerunner of SaaS - and encourage its partners to ready their applications and business models to offer users this service.

Each month we try our hardest to cover every angle and aspect of software engineering. Indeed, we pride ourselves on our platform-agnostic wide ranging view of the development landscape. How then could we push ourselves even further and really broaden the spectrum of our editorial coverage? The answer had to be – the complete A to Z of software. Well, not complete, but a rip roaring twenty-six letter technology tour to provoke some interest and thoughts in areas you might not normally think about.

But first, a personal confession so that you know how all this started. I actually got the idea from reading a cookery magazine that had done something similar. You know the kind of thing – A for apples, B for bread, C for custard and so on. But those pesky food journalists have it easy don’t they? When they get to X, Y and Z they can just use X for Xérès Sherry, Y for Yeast and even Z for Zabaglione.

Now, X is simple enough with plenty of XMLs out there, Z for zero tolerance we reckoned, but Y, wow - now that is a hard one.

So, please dive in and jump to your favourite letter. It was always going to be the case that we would miss out on a few key areas, but we think it’s pretty cool to be able to work your way through the whole alphabet and just stay within the world of software development. Next month, 1001 aspects of application development and how you can implement them in your daily working schedule. Joke – ok?

Happy coding!
