Many companies and organisations are now rushing to create their own unique online community presence.

A typical presence consists of a set of integrated applications that usually includes blogs, discussion forums, photo and file galleries, along with other online entities such as a “reader and roller”. This latter application provides capabilities for monitoring the content from a number of blogs in which RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds are available.

A technology that has proven popular for creating these online communities is Community Server (www.communityserver.org). According to the new book, “Community Server Quickly: A Concise and Practical Guide to Installation, Administration, and Customisation”, just some examples of organisations that have already used Community Server are Microsoft, Dell, Conde Nast, and Match.com.

As expected from its title, “Community Server Quickly: A Concise and Practical Guide to Installation, Administration, and Customisation”, this book has been written to be a one-stop source of timely information for getting Community Server up and running quickly for your company.

After a couple of introductory chapters that respectively explain what Community Server is and how to get started with it, there are subsequent chapters that are devoted to working with blogs, forums, galleries, reports, reader and roller, settings, and system tools. The other two remaining chapters of the book focus on managing your community’s users and customising Community Server – this particular chapter can be downloaded from the site of the book’s publisher, Packt Publishing.
