Henslow’s contemporaries also created herbaria; what distinguishes Henslow’s is that, as these figures show, he frequently placed more than one specimen on a single sheet of paper. This allowed the variation between different members of the same species to be highlighted, so the implication that Henslow was studying variation is clear.
