So should you re-start with Quark?
Quark has come under criticism for ‘dropping the ball’ in recent years and losing out to its major rival. Certainly, Adobe Creative Suite 3 has made quite an impression on the market, but Quark didn’t carve the space and name for itself that it quite clearly has by being average – so if there had been a lack of focus, it appears likely that many of these shortfalls (160 new features I believe) have been addressed with the latest version of the product.
Quoted on ZDNET Jürgen Kurz, senior vice-president at Quark said, “Much of the emphasis in the upgraded version of XPress had been on graphics and illustrations. One of the things we have been spending a lot of money on is better support for [Adobe] Photoshop. We now have the best Photoshop integration on the market.”
Quark says that it thinks that QuarkXPress 7, “Represents a breakthrough that will forever change page composition. The industry has gone from proprietary formats to open formats. No application supports more open standards than QuarkXPress 7. The sheer size of the Quark user base and the vast number of third-party developers will undoubtedly lead to exciting new tools.”
